A unique grave marker stands in isolation in an idyllic English churchyard. It marks the grave of John Newland (1791-1868), remembered locally as a hero who with his trumpet rallied a mob rioting against social conditions in 1830, for which he was imprisoned. The full story however is much more interesting and beset with shadows. Here you will find a fully researched paper published in July 2022, drawing on all available source and information. A shorter paper on the same subject appeared in the International Trumpet Guild Journal volume 46 no. 3 in March 2022.
